This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.
Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.
An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
The couple confront the sort of issues that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
