Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then located numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials report preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the community for information.

A senior official said the attack left him speechless and had to be solved promptly.

"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
